Discover meaningful connections in close-knit communities
On a visit to vacationland, this Family Nurse Practitioner decided she wanted to stay and deliver healthcare to the folks who need it most.
What made you want to come to rural Maine?
I did some work in California and spent some time in Moscow, Russia. I’ve spent a lot of my career in rural settings in home health and primary healthcare. But I landed here a few years ago, just to come for the summer, and loved it, so I decided to stay.
I grew up on the Gulf Coast of Louisiana on boats, so the combination of being on a boat and delivering healthcare to the bridged islands of Maine seemed like the perfect combination for me.
The beauty of Maine and the closeness of the communities definitely drew me in. It’s very wholesome in that way, and it doesn’t exist in other places. The quality of life here is amazing; there’s a sense of peace, calmness, and connectedness. I’ve really fallen in love with Maine.

What do you enjoy about serving rural communities?
The connection is so meaningful. It’s very purposeful, and quite honestly, when the connection is made, it feels like magic. The people on the islands are quite resilient and loving. It feels like a privilege to be able to serve them in a way that couldn’t happen if we weren’t out there year-round. Increasing their access to healthcare feels like it’s a part of my mission in life.
I can prevent a resident from foregoing healthcare altogether which has a massive impact. I’ve found that building trust with my patients works to support them on their healthcare path. It prevents catastrophic events that come at a cost to all of us.
I really feel like I am a part of their community, like I’m a part of their family. It’s very personal and intimate.
What makes providing healthcare in a rural setting different from others?
Healthcare can be very hectic. There’s a lot of burnout for providers, but in a rural setting, you can offer more holistic, well-rounded care.
Due to a lack of resources at times, it forces your team to work together closely. You must collaborate and come up with solutions, which makes everyone stronger. There is a very collegial atmosphere, whether you are asking others for help, or just looking for someone to lean on. It’s not a solo adventure, and I think that’s a big part of our careers. There is also a greater appreciation of my work here that might not exist in other places. It’s unique.
Are there certain activities you enjoy outside of work?
Living here in Maine is beautiful, especially if you enjoy the outdoors. I have these hiking trails just outside of my apartment that are very accessible. I’ve also joined a rowing community here. Even in the winter, there’s an increase in community activities, since everyone is aware of their neighbors, and makes an effort to care for them.
