Finding a fulfilling career that provides true work-life balance

I love getting to be a part of people moving forward in their lives.

What do you do as a Mental Health Rehabilitation Technician/Community, or MHRT/C?

As an MHRT/C, I work with people with a variety of mental health issues. I primarily provide support with filling out paperwork, keeping track of appointments, assisting with housing applications, finding resources for food, childcare, and more.

How did you get into this line of work?

I actually went to college for nursing. I knew I wanted to help people, but I didn’t really know how. It didn’t take long for me to realize that the nursing program was not my calling. So, I switched into the mental health program. As soon as I got there, I knew that’s where I belonged.

What do you enjoy about your work?

I think my favorite thing about my job is that I get to see people believe in themselves again. I get to stand next to people while they fight for what they need. I love getting to be a part of people moving forward in their lives. I am really just a tool that they have to help them succeed, and I am very proud of all the people I work with. They are all wonderful, thoughtful, and intelligent.

I also enjoy having a lot of control over my schedule. I have two children, and having this type of career has allowed me a lot of flexibility and time to enjoy motherhood. I’m able to fit in activities, appointments, and take time off when they need me at home. You’re surrounded by people that are mental health professionals, and there’s kindness and compassion everywhere you go.

What types of skills and qualities does it take to be successful in this field?

I would say people that want face to face time with others, and those who enjoy working with people will find success. If your heart is in the right place, there’s always a way to make an impact in the mental health field.

What advice would you give to someone who is interested in getting into the field?

There’s such a need for people to work in this field. There are a lot of different levels to it and a lot of different roles. It’s different every day. No two appointments are exactly the same.
