Tapping into lived experience to give back to the community

Robert, LADC

What do you do as a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor, or LADC?

On a daily basis, what I do can vary. I work with individuals who are at risk, and/or suffering from substance use disorder. I also work in policy, helping to manage contracts with programs like overdose prevention and jail-based medication programs for opioid use disorder.

How did you get into this line of work?

The majority of my life, I spent in and out of the prison system. Eventually, I reached out to a program and learned how what I was doing affected other people. Then I started taking college classes and philosophy and ethics classes. They were a pivotal factor in my point of view of the world. I realized that I needed to give back to the community, to build myself up, and to get clean from substances.

I continue to grow and learn on a daily basis.

What do you enjoy about your work?

I like how it helps maintain my recovery. I continue to grow and learn on a daily basis – not just about myself but about other people.

I love getting to work one-on-one with individuals and make connections. I’m able to relate well to them and listen to what they’re saying.

What types of skills and qualities does it take to be successful in this field?

Anyone who has the ability to connect with people, has a sense of humor, and is understanding would thrive in this position. It’s also important to be able to accept others for where they are without judgment. It’s all about empathy.

What advice would you give to someone who is interested in getting into the field?

If you enjoy working with people, then you should try it. Watching somebody progress through life and overcome their battles is so rewarding.

You might be surprised. Many positions are easy to access, and there is a lot of assistance that is available to help you get certifications and training.
