Turning a passion for helping others into a career

Faith, MHRT-1

What do you do as a Mental Health Rehabilitation Technician-1, or MHRT-1?

I am working as a residential counselor with adult women who live with mental health illnesses. I check in with my residents, assess their mental health and emotional state, and respond if there is any need. I am responsible for collaborating with their medical providers, social workers, and registered nurses. I also coordinate their group therapy sessions and schedule their outings into the community. The overall goal is to lead these ladies to independence and help them manage their mental health symptoms so that they can have a better quality of life.

How did you get into this line of work?

I was working in the schools in special education, and I was searching for something new that would align with my special education degree and experience. I decided mental health would be the best fit, because it is all about being compassionate and loving what you do. At first, I started part time, but after having my own family, I shifted to full time, and I’ve loved it ever since.

It’s really rewarding to see the progress clients are making.

What do you enjoy about your work?

It is really rewarding to see the progress that these residents are making and know that you are playing a part in it. It makes you want to keep doing more and more every day.

There is a lot of flexibility to meet your needs. For example, I have worked at my job for 11 years, and I’ve worked part time and full time at various times, depending on how my family’s needs have changed. Right now, I’m back in school, so I’m working part time.

What types of skills and qualities does it take to be successful in this field?

If you have a passion to help others, you’re compassionate, and you’re patient, you will love this. I think for most people, it is a calling. The great thing about this field is that you can get started without any experience – you get that on the job, along with your training. Providers will help you through the process and make sure you pass all your requirements, so there’s nothing to be afraid of.

What advice would you give to someone who is interested in getting into the field?

It can be challenging. But if you are ready to face those challenges and see the difference you could make, you’ll fit right in. There’s so much support in this field. You’ll never feel alone, or inadequate.
